As part of its webinar series, M20’s second webinar focuses on the landmark initiative led by UNESCO to ensure that news content is fairly compensated in the age of digital platforms and artificial intelligence.
Building on the UNESCO Guidelines for the Governance of Digital Platforms (2023), which recognize media actors as essential stakeholders in the digital information ecosystem and call for greater support for media viability, diversity, and plurality, the Guidance is also informed by UNESCO’s work on generative AI governance and human rights impact assessments, as well as global principles on fair compensation for journalism. It further reinforces UNESCO’s broader efforts to address the sustainability challenges facing independent media, including through the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) and the Media Viability Manifesto initiative, which promotes coordinated action to support sustainable journalism worldwide.
The M20 facilitated the drafting of the UNESCO fair compensation guidance with ALT Advisory and the GIBS Media Leadership Think Tank, including expert input from within and outside the M20 network. This webinar was convened to build awareness around these challenging issues and to encourage contributions to the guidelines.
